The most renowned & ancient mummers team in the south east, brimful of dramatic, vocal & musical talent, offers a festive midwinter entertainment of a Kent or Sussex Mummers Play, a Hooden Horse and delightful traditional seasonal songs.

The Tonbridge Mummers & Hoodeners have 30 years’ experience of performing mummers plays and their own distinctive Hooden Horse play on tv (currently on BBC web-site), at stately homes, folk clubs & festivals, universities, pubs, and Archaeological, Historical & Family History, WI and U3A club socials. Recent bookings include Kent & Sussex Archaeological Societies; Society of Men of Kent & Kentish Men, Leigh Historical Society, University of Kent, Bearsted, Shoreham & Farningham Historical Societies, Crawley & Brighton & Hove Family History Groups & Nellie’s, Elsie’s & the Beacon folk clubs.

The team performs from a range of traditional plays and seasonal songs from Kent and Sussex researched by the team. The Mummers include a wealth of musical & vocal talent, including musical director Mick Lynn, outstanding Kent traditional singers Liz Randall & John Morgan & Geoff Doel, co-author with his wife Fran of A Kent Christmas and Folklore of Kent. Mick & Geoff also give presentations on aspects of Kent folklore & customs with slides, songs & readings and have recently edited & re-issued (with Richard Maylam) Percy Maylam’s classic book on The Kent Hooden Horse, featured on BBC TV last Christmas.

The Christmas show of two short plays and a blend of entertaining & traditional seasonal songs is flexible in timing and can fit in with your club’s schedule. We’re essentially available from Nov – Twelfth Night.
